Cell phone service is a necessity in daily life, but it can be a costly one. Finding quality cell phone service at an affordable price can be a challenge and make it near impossible for many people to obtain. Fortunately, there is a way to make it happen- one that does not require large monthly payments.

The federal government created the Lifeline Program in 1985 for low-income families to obtain cell phone assistance Oklahoma and throughout the country. Lifeline gives users a free phone, a set amount of minutes, and data to use for free each month with the ability to pay for extra if needed.

Qualifying for the Lifeline program requires that you meet certain requirements. Your income must be at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or you must be enrolled in a government aid program. Some examples include the following:

  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)- also called food stamps.
  • SSI
  • Public housing assistance
  • Medical
  • Tribal assistance programs, such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)

If you are in need of cell phone assistance, gather your ID, pay statements or W2s, and an approval letter from your government program. It takes only moments to see if you qualify and apply.
