NTT DOCOMO, a personalized mobile solutions provider for smarter living, announced today an agreement with Tesla Motors, Inc. to provide M2M connectivity and mobile communications support that will enable Tesla Model S drivers in Japan to enjoy in-car telematics for navigation using high-resolution maps, online music such as on-demand Internet radio, and much more via the vehicle’s 17-inch touchscreen.
The delivery of the Tesla Model S, a cutting-edge electric vehicle incorporating Internet of Things (IoT) technology, will begin in Japan this summer.
Tesla selected DOCOMO after favorably evaluating its mobile network infrastructure’s stable, extra-wide availability, including in downtown areas with skyscrapers and in mountainous regions, and extensive support for corporate customers. Tesla also was particularly impressed with DOCOMO’s enterprise-tailored M2M platform that allows centralized management of M2M communications both in Japan and overseas.
DOCOMO is expanding its involvement with in-car infotainment telematics and Intelligent Transport Systems that motoring subscribers will use for smarter, more convenient lives.
