Porsche is a carmaker known for producing luxurious sports cars. The German firm is a part of the Volkswagen Group. One of its iconic models, the 911, is pretty much based on the Volkswagen Beetle.

But the two car companies live at opposite ends of the spectrum. Volkswagen produces cars to suit a wide range of purposes. Whereas Porsche builds high-end sports cars and SUVs for the luxury and prestige end of the market.

Let’s face it; the people that buy Porsche cars are those with a lot of spare cash in their wallets. High-end cars always have high-end price tags. And so a person with a less-than modest income will struggle to afford buying such a vehicle.

These days, Porsche want more people to buy their cars and so they have appealed to other markets. For instance, the Boxster is an affordable sports car that has all the same qualities as its other brothers and sisters.

But just because the Porsche Boxster is the cheapest model in the lineup doesn’t make it any less capable than the other models! And as Porsche cars get older, they soon become affordable to more people on the used car market.

Do you want to buy a Porsche? Do you think it’s nothing more than a pipe dream? Or maybe you’ve got the cash saved for a new model but you don’t know what to get? Whatever your circumstances don’t buy a Porsche until you read this handy guide first! Once you do, you will be able to make a better-informed buying decision.

Should you buy a new or used Porsche?

If you had a choice, I’m sure you would love to drive away from the dealer showroom in a brand new Porsche. But buying a new model isn’t always the best idea for everyone, so today I will help you decide which is the better option for you.

Buying a brand new Porsche means you can decide what options, paint colors and so forth you would like on your new pride and joy. And because you are its first owner, you are pretty much guaranteed a trouble-free car.

A used model is cheaper to buy than a new one. The only options you can get are dealer-fitted ones. Whereas there are more options on a new model because they are factory-fitted.

It is possible to buy a used Porsche that looks and drives just as good as a brand new model. But there are some occasions where you could end up buying a lemon. At the end of the day, it will be your financial situation that determines whether you buy a new or used Porsche.

Just bear the above points in mind as part of the decision.

Which model is best for your needs?

If you don’t know much about Porsche, then you might not know that Porsche sell a plethora of models other than the 911 and Boxster! In fact, there are seven different current models available to buy.

They are as follows:

  • 911;
  • 918 Spyder;
  • Boxster;
  • Cayenne;
  • Cayman;
  • Macan;
  • Panamera.

The 911, 918 Spyder, Boxster and Cayman are all sports cars. Those of you that want a practical 911 can opt for the Panamera. The larger Macan and Cayenne cars offer SUV practicality and design but with Porsche design.

If you look at price, the Boxster is the cheapest to buy. Prices start from $51,400 for a new standard Boxster. At the other end of the scale, you are looking at the 918 Spyder. The standard model starts from $845,000!

You will doubtless get great deals on nearly-new and used models. Check out the websites of Porsche specialists like inchcape.co.uk/Porsche/ for new and used prices. You will also find details on specifications, equipment and features too.

Go for a test drive

Once you have decided which model you want to buy, the next step is to take one out for a test drive! The Porsche you want might look amazing and offer excellent features on paper. But driving a car and living with it on a daily basis can be a whole different kettle of fish.

That’s why it is important you go for a test drive. It doesn’t matter whether the model you want should be a new or used one. You need to know how it handles on the road, and whether the car “feels right” for you or not.

Given that Porsche cars aren’t the cheapest to buy at the best of times, you need to be sure that the money you pay for one is worth it. The last thing you want to do is end up with an expensive sports car that you hate driving!

A lot of would-be Porsche owners get caught out in this way. As I mentioned earlier, there are seven different current models to choose from – and a plethora of others on the used car market.

I’m sure you are bound to find one that’s right for you. But if you don’t, at least you won’t have made an expensive mistake by getting one and then regretting your decision later.

Take care with used models

When you go for a test drive in a used Porsche, be sure to keep your eyes, ears and nose open for any suspicious sounds or smells coming from the car. Porsche cars are pretty reliable, but only if they get maintained on a regular basis.

Are you unfamiliar with car terminology or what to check for on used cars? If so, consider bringing a car enthusiast or mechanic friend with you when you go and look at some used Porsche models for sale.

Cars bought from Porsche main dealers undergo rigorous safety and mechanical checks before they go on sale. The same cannot always get said for independent car dealerships.

In any event, think about paying for an independent check on the used Porsche you want to buy. Such checks offer peace of mind and prevent you from ending up with a duff car!
