Mercedes-Benz to Build Innovative Battery Recycling Factory

German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to construct a new battery recycling factory in Kuppenheim, Germany. The factory is part of Mercedes-Benz’s sustainable business strategy to shift towards electric vehicles, and it aims to establish closed-loop recycling of battery raw materials, making it a unique integrated recycling concept within a single factory in Europe.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new factory was held recently, attended by key stakeholders, including Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Thekla Walker, Minister for the Environment, Climate Protection, and Energy Sector Baden-Württemberg, and Michael Brecht, Chairman of the Works Council of the joint operation Gaggenau.

Factory Capacity and Recycling Rate

The new factory will have an annual capacity of 2,500 tonnes, with a recycling rate of more than 96 percent. This means that the factory will have the capacity to recycle most of the batteries used in electric vehicles.

Partnership with Primobius

Mercedes-Benz is partnering with technology firm Primobius to develop the factory. The investment for the project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection as part of a scientific research project.

Circular Economy of Battery Systems

Mercedes-Benz is taking a holistic approach to the circular economy of battery systems, looking at three core issues: circular design, value retention, and closing the loop. The company aims to ensure that the production and disposal of batteries are as sustainable as possible, with minimal impact on the environment.

Closed-Loop Recycling

The closed-loop recycling concept is a key component of Mercedes-Benz’s circular economy strategy. The concept involves collecting used batteries and recycling them to recover valuable raw materials. These materials can then be used to manufacture new batteries, reducing the need for new materials.

Mercedes-Benz’s closed-loop recycling concept is an example of the company’s commitment to closing the loop on the production and disposal of batteries. The company aims to create a sustainable cycle where raw materials are extracted, used, and then recycled, with minimal impact on the environment.

Importance of Battery Recycling

Battery recycling is an essential component of the shift towards electric vehicles. The recycling of batteries reduces the demand for raw materials, minimizes waste, and ensures that valuable materials are not lost. It also helps to reduce the environmental impact of electric vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz’s innovative battery recycling factory is an essential component of the company’s sustainable business strategy. By establishing closed-loop recycling of battery raw materials, the company is taking a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of electric vehicles. With the support of its partners and the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, Mercedes-Benz is well-positioned to lead the way in the sustainable production and disposal of batteries.
